The Kyu Grade Judo Championship was held as scheduled on the 3rd March 2002 at the Bedok Indoor Sports Hall. The event saw many participants from various schools, tertiary institutions and clubs. There were a total of 200 over bouts and the events lasted from 9am to 5pm!

This is also the first year that the SJF Referee and Tournament Committee (R.T.C.) held its inaugural Annual Referee Examination based on refereeing skills displayed by examinees at the Championship.

The examination saw the graduation of 9 Black-belters who were conferred the National Referee Grade 'C' status. These new additions to the current National Referee Squad increased its strength to 31 national referees.
